Dashrit Pandher

Dashrit, prefererably Dash. My pronouns are she/they, and I am a third year psychobiology student attending UCLA. I am currently residing in Los Angeles, but I was originally from Fresno, CA, which is located about an hour away from Yosemite National Park. Having grown up in the Central Valley, being surrounded by nature on all sides, I greatly enjoy hiking and wish it was something I could do more often while I am here in LA. Being from the Central Valley, a socioeconomically disadvantaged community of predominantly minorities, I grew up in a community that lacked a college-bound mentality, and was conservative when it came to self-expression. A lot of the work I do currently is focused around bringing resources and education back to my home community in order to help high school students pursue higher education. I hope to one day have created a large enough impact in my community, by helping multiple students pursue higher education, that the concept of college is no longer foreign and is in fact something encouraged. Beyond lacking a college-bound mentality, the Central Valley is not very open when it comes to self-expression that does not fit the norms of society. A lot of this rigidness and conservative thinking comes from the European values that were absorbed into many minority cultures following Europe’s colonial takeover. As a queer woman of color, it was quite hard for me to explore that aspect of my identity, and it's still an aspect that I continuously
